It’s what kicked it into gear in the first place and it’s what given it a needed surge when it periodically settles into a comfortable stupor. But rock ‘n’ roll outrage can be a serious business, too. Never more so than when David Bowie scanned the post-Woodstock landscape of the early 1970s and decided that a 1969 song by a pretty obscure American band he admired, the Stooges, about summed it up: No Fun. David Bowie was different. Concept albums were all the rage since “Tommy” had elevated the Who into the rock elite a couple of years earlier, and Bowie began toying with his own song cycle. Bowie’s vision was of something “much, much heavier, and much stranger.” It centered on a character Bowie would inhabit. Informed by sci-fi grandeur and apocalyptic dread, it would play to Bowie’s strengths: his theatricality, musical versatility, androgynous beauty and keen ambition. Bowie dubbed his new self Ziggy Stardust, and the erstwhile Rats were now the Spiders from Mars. Inspired by the life and times of a troubled British rocker named Vince Taylor whose messianic visions tipped into madness, the 38-minute "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" tells the story of the planet on the precipice (humanity has been given a five-year expiration date) and the rock-star-like alien whose misbegotten attempt to deliver some sort of salve and hope to the people of the world (or the kids, at least) ends with a “Rock N’ Roll Suicide.” Perhaps more important, Ziggy Stardust represents a very calculated and razor-sharp break from rock’s past and a signpost for its fractured future. Bowie’s grand gamble worked. Ziggy Stardust was reviled by many outraged by its sexual stance (though they might have found themselves absentmindedly whistling “Starman” or “Ziggy Stardust” if they listened all the way through). Sales aside, Ziggy Stardust’s cultural impact has been incalculable.
